At least one person by the name Jacob Kauffman is listed on some rosters of the German Regiment (or German Battalion), Continental.

This Regiment was formed in 1776 from four Maryland and four Pennsylvania companies, commanded by Col. Nicholas Haussegger.

I have no idea whether the person listed was from MD or PA, or if the name goes with your relative. It's a pretty common name.

You can look at the rosters where the name appears by asking your library to borrow Roll number 130 of National Archives Micropublication 246, "Revolutionary War Rolls," by inter-library loan.

The rosters do not mention wives, and unless a size roll survives (most do not) no mention of a place of birth or residence.

If he or a surviving widow applied for a pension based on his service, you can find the file yourself on footnote.com, or a few pages from the file on HeritageQuest that your local Library may subscribe to.

For genealogical information you would want to post on the surname message board, or boards for the Counties in which he lived.
