Thanks for the response, John. You know, the first I heard of this sort of thing was just a week or two ago, when I watched a PBS series on tracing the ancestors of famous African-Americans. It was extremely interesting. I have since done some research on the process you describe (probably nowhere near the amount you have, however), and have concluded that, for the time being, it is prohibitively expensive for me.

However, perhaps I can talk my dad into it... his results should be the same as mine, no?
