Appenzeller-Cox puzzle 1920s Kalamazoo, Michigan

I have an interesting dilemna to solve regarding both Norbert Joseph Cox and his brother David E. Cox, sons of David & Eliza Cox, the latter emigrants from Ontario to Traverse City or Gaylord, where Norbert & David Jr. were born. The Kalamazoo Co. records show that David E. married Esther Appenzeller (a nurse) on 6-2-1924 in South Haven, while the obituary for Norbert Joseph married an Esther, and another record claims he married Esther Appenzeller on 5-29-1924 in South Haven. I have the death record for Norbert but not the one for David. It is possible that David died and Norbert married his brother's widow. Any information that can clarify this confusion would be appreciated. thanks.
