His Civil War Muster record shows that he was 19 when he enlisted in 1862, and he died 30 Nov 1862 at the smallpox hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He served as a private in Company F 54 NC Infantry, along with his brother David Absalom, paternal uncles Peter and Pinkney, and cousin Sanders Kerr Apple, a sergeant. Sanders Apple, b 1 Apr 1840, also died at the smallpox hospital in Richmond, 10 Nov 1862.
