I am researching the STALLINGS surnamwe. It is my wife's maternal side. Her Family Oral History (FOH) relates the following: her grandfather, John Dennis had his origins in Bradley County, Arkansas and later moved to Wynne, Cross County, Arkansas around 1923. His father's name was Shade or he had a brother named Shade or both his father and brother were named Shade. Shade may have been a free person of color or was favored by his owner (owner took Shade everywhere with him) and was emancipated prior to 1865 and given land. Shade's wife was named Laura STRICKLAND and was a Cherokee Indian who had an opportunity to reside on a reservation but declined the offer. Laura was the midwife in the local area and was very much respected. John Dennis married Martha JACKSON, daughter of Andrew JACKSON and Rhoda McCLAIN. That's what I knew going in.
Setting the record straight: Thanks to a Bradley County researcher (Dena) I've focused on the following family as they appear the 1870 Federal census:

Ok. It's taking shape. Perhaps Shade was short for Shadrick. The enumerator is forgiven his spelling. Coming forward to 1880:

I'm convinced this is my wife's family. Father named Shadrick and a son named Shadrick and my wife's father Dennis and they are in Bradley County, Arkansas. The FOH is proven, for me anyway. Now, to add confirmation.... a surfing I go.
I come up on a STALLINGS web site hosted by Linda F. Harris. Starting with Nicholas and coming forward a significant number of Shadracks (Shadrach) appear. It is in Meshach's, b. abt. 1750, Bute, NC (Elias) line significant information is noted. Meshach's (Nancy Riddick) son Shadrach, b. abt. 1775, Duplin County, NC has a son Wiley, b.1796 (Susan Murphy) who has a son Shadrach, b. 1821 Duplin County, NC. This Shadrach m. Lelar CALLOWAY. Their Children:
George, b. 1854, Louisiana
Shadrack, b. abt. 1860, Louisiana
James, b. abt. 1867, Ark.
Martha, J. b. about 1870, Ark.
Frances, b. abt. 1873, Missouri
Dennis, b. abt. 1877, Ark.
Is this the same family shown in the 1870 and 1880 Arkansas Federal census above? I'd be hard pressed to say no. Pauline Mitchell Pierce notes in a post at Stallings Family Genealogy Forum that Wiley moved to Thomas County, Georgia; Microfilm # M432-83, Division 81, Thomas County, Georgia:

Attention is again focused on the FOH. Could Wiley have had a slave concubine who was Shade's mother? With the aid of Federal census I have a handle on my wife's family from 1900 to present, well almost. Comments, thoughts, clarification, additions, exclusions, and plain old help from 1870 back is welcomed.
