Hello Preston! Can I stir the pot just a little? (wink). I'm trying to determine how you came up with Wiley Stallings as the possible last enslaver? (Am I correct on this)? In 1850, you have Wiley owning 4 slaves:
1-59-F (b. 1891)
1-19-F (b. 1831)
1-4-F-Mu (b. 1846)
1-2-M-MU (b. 1848)
(I'm trying to determine which one of these men could have been Shadrick)?
By 1870 they would have been:
1-79-F
1-39-F
1-24-F-MU
1-22-F-MU (If they were still slaves that is)
OK now..Wiley (age 56) married Susan (age 49, b. 1801) and in 1850, they're found in Thomas County, Georgia, correct? In 1860, I can't find hide nor hair of Wiley, but, I do see a Susan Stallings, age 58 (b.1801, GA), and the only person living in the house with her is Susan A.K. Stallings, age 27. Wiley and Susan did have a daughter named Susan, but, she would have only been 15 or 16, possible 17 (could the enumerator had made a pen mistake)? Anyway, looks like Wiley may have died before the 1860 census was taken.
Now..on the 1848-9 tax list for Morgan County, Ga., there's a Malakich Stallings and, he's also listed on the 1850 census for that state. By 1860, he's in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, looks like he's been there since 1851-52 per the age of his oldest son that lives in the house with him in 1870. I can't find him on the census for 1860 but, he is on the slave schedule for that state:
1860 Natchitoches Parish Slave Schedule
Malacha H. Stallings (Malachi Hudson Stalling)
6 Slaves (per ancestry.com)
1-35-M-B (b. 1825)
1-30-M-B (b. 1830)
1-22-M-B (b. 1838)
1-20-M-B (b. 1840)
1-20-F-MU (b. 1840)
1-17-F-MU (b. 1843)
Per the 1870 census, Shadrach Stallings stating his age to be 54 (b. 1816), but, on the 1880 census, he's stating his age to be 59, that would have made him have been born in 1821 or around that time, could he have been the 1-35-M-B (b. 1825) that belonged to Malakiah Stallings in 1860? I'm looking at the household of Malakiah Stallings in Louisiana with his oldest child putting him there in the early 1850s, and the 1870 household of Shadrach Stallings, his oldest son George (on this census) is 19 (b. 1851) and born in Louisiana. Is this close for comfort or what?
(FYI)
Per familysearch.org.
Malachi Hudson Stallings
b. Edgecomb NC, 29 May 1802
d. 27 Feb 1881, Natchitoches, LA
Parents: Job Stallings
Mary Alston
I also see on the Bradley County Arkansas Web Site in the Cemetary listing for Jersey (or Shady Grove) that Shadrach's youngest son, Thomas, was a minister, with a wife by the name of Mittie. I wouldn't bet a check but I would bet part of it that the other Stallings buried there were the children of Thomas and Mittie with the most recent burial being in 1993, that of Elvester Stalling..you might want to check in the phone book for any Stallings living there, write them a letter and explain what your doing..ya never know!
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that your Wiley is the wrong person, but this is just another case..
Keep the search up!
Dena
