John R. Holcomb

John R. Holcomb, prominent in the agricultural affairs of Mills
Township, was born in Franklin County, Ga., August 18, 1824,
being the son of Solomon and Elizabeth (Ray) Holcomb both
natives of Georgia. The father, who was born in 1805, of
English nationality, was engaged in farming all his life,
and was married about 1821. He had a family of eight
children, five of whom are now living: John R., Asa, William
M., Joseph, Polly A. (wife of Berry Crocker) and Matilda
(now Mrs. Campbell). Moving from Georgia to Alabama in
1854, the senior Holcomb remained until 1858, when he came
to Arkansas and located in Hot Spring County, here residing
until his death in 1859. He was a member of the Baptist
Church, as is also his wife, who still survives him, and
who was born in 1804. John R. Holcomb was married to Miss
Celia H. Ashworth, daughter of Job Ashworth, of Virginia,
in 1847. Their union took place in Hall County, Ga., from
which locality they emigrated to Alabama in 1868, remaining
until 1871. Subsequently they removed to Clark County, Ark.,
and afterward located in Garland County. Mr. Holcomb now
owns 800 acres of land, with about 140 acres under cultivation,
and besides these interests he entered into the mercantile
business, building up and enjoying a large trade. In 1863
he enlisted in Company D, Twenty-ninth Georgia Infantry, under
Capt. Surrill and Col. Mitchell, in which regiment he served
until his discharge in 1865. He was in the battle of
Chickamauga and all of the principal engagements. Mrs.
Holcomb was born in Franklin County, Ga., in 1828. Her father
had eight children: John, Elizabeth, Malissa, Celia H., William S.,
Thomas R., Joseph J. and one other. Mr. Ashworth followed farming
all his life and died in 1854, his wife (a member of the
Methodist Church) following him in 1859. Mr. and Mrs. Holcomb
are members of the Baptist Church. The former is a Democrat and
one of the most prominent citizens of his township. His land is
underlaid with mineral ore, in which gold has been discovered
that, according to the report of W. H. Garner, of St. Louis,
assayed two ounces to the ton, and it is Mr. Holcomb's belief
that this could be mined in paying quantities.

Mary Ann7 Godwin (Aletha6 Spencer, Seymore5, William4, Jarvis/Jervis3, Johnson2,
Unknown1) was born December 26, 1842 in Ripley Co. Miss, and died April 20, 1946 in Tyler, Tx. She
married William Mindett Holcomb August 16, 1860 in Hot Springs. Ar, son of Solomon Holcomb and
Elizabeth Ray. He was born February 22, 1841 in Alabama or Georgia, and died January 09, 1929 in
Kentuckytown, Grayson County, Texas of Pneumonia.

Notes for William Mindett Holcomb:
Enlisted in the Confederate Service in 1862 and served for three years and a few months. Served in
Monroe's regiment, 1st Arkansas Cavalry and he enlisted in Clark County, Arkansas. Was in Co. F 1st
Ark Confederate Cavalry.
William Holcomb served in the Civil War with the writer's Great Grandfather on the maternal side:
William Miller Crowson, who acted as a witness to W.M. Holcomb's application for a Confederate
Pension in 1904. The application for pension was approved in 1907. The pension number is 12692. W.
M. joined the CSA in ARK with his Brother Joseph Holcomb who was about 7 years older.
William Mindet lived in Ladonia, Texas in 1903. Additionally he had a Brother, Joseph Holcomb living
in Ladonia, Texas at the time.
In 1903, William Taylor Holcomb, brought his family from Alabama to Ladonia , Texas. This writer
has always pondered the question that of all the places in the world why his Grandfather, William
Taylor Holcomb, picked Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas. Now I know. (Roger Crowson Holcomb)
Joseph Holcomb states in his affadavit that he has known William M Holcomb all his life and that he
first knew him in Alabama which pretty much places Alabama as his place of birth. Have to assume
that Solomon and Elizabeth were living there at the time.
My father, Travis Holcomb used to tell a story about his grandfather, William M having a long white
beard which he hadn't shaved since the Civil War. One day he was sitting on the front porch taking a
nap and something kept waking him up. He opened his eyes just a fraction and saw a small sparrow
tugging on his beard. The sparrow flew away to his nest and tucked the long white hair into the nest
lining. WM didn't move and kep his eyes partially closed and the sparrow came back several times for
the beard hairs. WM stayed still as long as he could about and hour until pain and laughter made him
get up and go into the house, but the sparrow had a nice fluffy nest lining. (Darrell Holcomb)
