Dr. Henry Harlan Smith (he used his middle name, and so as an adult, many people seem to have reversed his given names so that he is often listed as "Harlan Henry Smith" -- he tends to have used the name "Dr. H.H. Smith") was my great uncle (my mother's maternal uncle).

He was named "Henry" for his maternal grandfather -- Henry Benbrook (also buried in the Spring Creek Cemetery); and "Harlan" for his father's (David Hume Smith's) older brother -- Harlan Smith, born in TN @ 1844 who appears to have died as a child or in early adulthood (at least we have never been able to find evidence of him after the 1850 MO census).

I do have photographs of Henry Harlan Smith (as well as of his brothers, Benjamin Byrd, Walter Washington, and Ambrose Alvin) as well as a great deal of other information about him (and this Smith family in general) if you are still interested. His office was on the upper side of the street in "downtown" Calico Rock, and in addition to his practice in Calico Rock he was a surgeon for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. He is, of course, also noted for his promotion of the Ozarks, and you can still find online some recordings of songs by one or more of the singing groups that he sponsored and promoted as a way to promote the beauty and uniqueness of the Ozarks. He died as a very young man (@ 50) of a cerebral hemorrhage that he suffered while driving from Calico Rock to Little Rock.

Uncle "Doc" and Aunt Ida did not have children of their own, and so my mother and her five siblings were particularly close to this uncle.

I would be interested in learning the nature of your connection with or interest in Henry Harlan Smith.
