Do send for the death certificates of her family. It might have the information you are looking for. The same thing happened with my mother in law who told us her grandfather was Clarence Miller. We did find the death certificate of the correct Miller. Once I looked in the census and started tying things together. Her grandfather was Mark Miller. Where she got Clarence from I have no idea.
