My search for McLain in Jackson Co AR produced nothing and I just can't believe that somehow I have missed posting this line on this board.

There is a good bit of McLAIN history in Newport AR ... a former business there called McLAIN-HOLDEN Land and Lumber Co, a street in Newport named for the family, William David McLAIN served 1914-1919 as Jackson County Judge, and there are a large number of burials, including that of my great grandfather William David McLAIN b 1859 Lawrence County AR (Walnut Ridge) d Oct 1921 Newport AR. There was also an old Hazel Hotel / McLAIN Hotel that burned ...back in the 1960s as I recall.

William D. McLAIN's uncle William Cal and wife Nancy Saphronia "Aunt Phrony" MEAD McLAIN also lived in Newport. They are also buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Elizabeth "Aunt Lettie" McLAIN HOLDEN and her husband John R. HOLDEN are also buried in Wanut Grove Cemetery, and other burials include John M. McLAIN (brother to my great grandfather Wm David McLAIN) .... and wife Hattie DUVALL McLAIN who died 1901-1905. Their son John David "Johnny" McLAIN b about 1899 was orphaned when his parents died and he was raised by Wm David and wife Clara Cooper McLAIN.

That John David McLAIN married 1927 Elsie Leola BURT b 1907 Independence Co AR, d Oct 18 2000 Newport AR. They adopted a son b abaout 1932 TN and named him John David McLAIN. He became a Director of the Cincinnati Ballet and died Dec 1984 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co, Ohio.

This McLAIN line of mine has proven ties (DNA testing on 67 makers) with a Weakley Co TN line of Charles McCLAIN b about 1784 NC and wife Elizabeth UNKnown. They are my gggg grandparents and their son Charles McLAIN b about 1809 TN or possibly IL (where the family was for awhile) came to lawrence County AR before the 1850 census. I really do think some branches of the TN / KY line came earlier, but no proof of that. I do know that some branches went to Independence Co, and also to Logan County (DNA proven, and a paper trail with some holes).

In 1850, in Strawberry twn, Lawrence Co AR you will find my ggg grandparents household of Charles McLAIN and wife Perlina A. (b about 1811 TN) and children: Christiana b about 1831 TN, David (W) McLAIN b about 1833 TN, John Henry my great great grandfather b about 1835-37 TN, and Squire McLAIN b Feb 1842 TN.

The last known child they had was William Cal / California McLAIN born Nov 3 1853 Lawrence Co Arkansas. His first mariage was to Ellen FRY, a child of Sarah HARMON, FRY, RILEY who became the 2nd wife of Wm Cal's father ...my ggg grandfather CHarles McLAIN. Perlina A. died 1860 and in 1866 Charles married Sarah RILY. Charles died 1869 Lawrence Co and his widow (named in Loose Probate Records) was Sarah McLAIN, who in 1870 can be found in Lawrence Co AR as head of house with some of her FRY children that had obviously been living in the McLAIN household prior to death of Charles. Hence, William Cal McLAIN married 1872 to Ellen M. FRY. In 1880, he is living in BUffalo twp, Craighead County, and his wife is shown as Martha. Not sure who she is. We find another mariage shown in 1884 to an L.T, BECK, but she must have died soon also. In 1886, he married Nancy Saphronia MEAD who died 1925 in Newport, but her spouse William Cal McLAIN, a mail carrier, died May 4 1912 in Newport AR.

Charles & Perlina A. McLAIN's daughter Cristeny / Christiana McLAIN married about 1852-53 Lawrence Co AR (missing marriage record) to James SMITH b about 1830 KY and they had Polina Anna b about 1854 (mar John Thomas TEWELL); David W. SMITH b 1856 AR mar I think to R.Belle / Arabella FRAZIER and had a son J.H.SMITH b 1880 LawrenceCoAR; Charles A. SMITH b 1859, Nancy C. SMITH b 1862 AR mar E. Wesley LINGO b 1853 TN ..had a son James b 1878); John S. SMITH b 1865 AR; and James C. SMITH b 1866 AR.

Now, back to one of my mysteries ...Charles & Perlina A. McLAIN's son, Squire McLAIN b 1842 TN and wife Melinda Caroline HARDIN b about 1845 TN. I last found them on the 1900 census, lawrence County AR, Lawrence township, living nextdoor to a son James D. McLAIN b about 1867 AR. He may have been the only surviving child (others were Charles R. b 1865, Sarah A b 1869 AR, Mary S b 1874 AR, Serilda / Shrilda b 1878 in !MO for some reason; and Bernise b about 1882 AR.

The son James D. McLAIN b Oct 1867, i found had married first to a Lizzie (1900 census) apparently to his cousin David W. SMITH's widow (or they had divorced) R. Belle or Arabella SMITH. The research on this line is a bit muddled and unproven, but James D., son of Squire & Melinda Caroine Hardin McLAIN, had a son named James Drew McLAIN(I think) that is buried in the National Cemetery in Hot Springs. I lose the line after 1930 and am very interested in it.

Someone I am told has just in March 2008 done the 'sealing' on the LDS records for Squire McLAIN who married Melinda Caroline HARDIN. The FamilySearch.org / LDS site no longer shows who contributed information, but I am told it was contributed at Denver Colorado, but that the Denver CO area covers a lot of territory so could have been contributed by somebody living elsewhere.

Any help appreciated! And I hope that my McLAIN info will help someone who will let me know if there are any connections. I am always happy to help and to share.

Audrey in TN
