DR.McCURRY DIES AT AGE 106



Dr. J.H. McCurry, 106, who practiced medicine many years in the Cash area died Friday afternoon in a St. Louis, Missouri hospital.

He had made his home at 2631 S. 12th Street in St. Louis since his retirement in the 1960's.

When he first came to Northeast Arkansas shortly after his graduation from medical school he practiced in the Grubbs area but he spent most of his active years at Cash where he had an office on Highway 18.

In the early years of this century, he traveled on his medical rounds by horse and buggy and when necessary, on horseback.

He delivered hundreds of babies at homes over the area west of Jonesboro.

For many years, Dr. McCurry was secretary of the Craighead-Poinsett Medical Society and he was active in the Arkansas Medical Society and the American Medical Society. He was honored by all three groups for his many years of medical practice and was active in the 50-year clubs of all three organizations.

He quit delivering babies and performing some other medical duties several years beofre his retirement, but he was active in his medical practice until he was well over 90 years old.

After his retirement, he moved to St. Louis to be with his three daughters all of whom live there.

Survivors include the three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Harrison, Mrs. Hale Burns and Mrs. Alta Faur all of St. Louis, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday morning at 10 at Ballews Chapel Church near Grubbs. Burial will be in Ballews Chapel Cemetery with Farmers Union Funeral Home in charge.

The body will lie in state at the Farmers Union Chapel from 4 Monday afternoon until time of services.

Pallbearers will be Albert Taylor, Miller Burden, Garland Boyd, Pete Alexander, Lofton Johnson, Robert Johnson, Fred Boyd, and Bill Cureton. Members of the Craighead-Poinsett Medical Society will serve as honorary pallbearers.
