Sorry you have a brick wall on your line of Coopers. The 1870 census record you posted shows John born IL and he was in Independence Co AR in 1870. That still could be a branch of the NC / SC COOPER line that scattered to several states and territories in the 1840s.

I've tried in the past to link my branch in AR, down in St Francis / Monroe County , to a line that was in and around Lawrence County AR ...which is by Independence County. That line can be found as part of Nancy Matthew's line. You will find her "Nancy Matthew's Corner' on the Couchgenweb for Lawrence County Arkansas genealogy. She's also got a dead end, but you might find your John fits into hers in AR.
