There is a web site for federal land acquisitions in Arkansas.

In Johnson County, I see a James W. Smith who filed a claim on 40 acres (29/9N/25W)in 1839; a Claiborn Smith who filed a claim on 40 acres (17/9N/25W)in 1875; and a David E. Smith on 40 acres (23/9N/24W)in 1855. These locations are south Coalhill and Hartman and near the river.
