James, thank you for the work you've done and the suggestions. Thomas Spencer was a confederate veteran. I have his pension records and nothing indicates that he ever deserted. One person who did extensive research on him indicated that he and his wife, Mary jane Padgett Hurt died in Coal Hill. I do know that they were in Ouachita and Madison counties before 1880.
