Don't take the "desertion" to much to heart. If you read the history of the unit, it walked away pretty much as a group to go home and take care of families. He did re-enlist. I would suggest that you get the individual record cards (you will have to find microfilm for the unit, either at the Arkansas History Commission, or a NARA site that has the unit film for Arkansas). But your confirmation that he was a CSA veteran ties him to the Clarksville veteran's camp in 1892. T.S. & Mary Jane Hurt are listed in the Coal Hill Cemetery. Johnson County (Arkansas) Cemeteries Johnson County Home Extension Clubs 1986 The listings have only years, as follows: T.S. Hurt b. 1842 d. 1909 Mary Jane Hurt b. 1848 d. 1923 W. H. Hurt b. 1880 d. 1909 This opens another possibility - the Confederate pensions. As I'm typing this, I have opened the Ark. Hist. Commission site and find a pension issued to Thomas S. Hurt in 1901, widow's (M.J.) application in 1909, showing his death 6/15/1909, which may have been his actual death date, or the date they reported his death to stop payments: http://www.ark-ives.com/search/detail.asp?sec=ConfPension&id=15715 You can order this from them, or go find it & print out whatever docs might exist at a library which has this film (Dallas TX genealogy dept. has it). It does not show a death date for the widow. Notify Administrator about this message?
