Census enumerations in Arkansas are listed by Township, County, State. Townships do not show up on maps, but some townships do have towns inside their boundaries and the towns show up on maps. This creates a lot of confusion when you find a census record or a death certificate and then start looking for what is believed to be a town.
The townships of Lee County, Arkansas, starting from the NW corner and working west to east are Fleener, Texas, Union (contains town of Haynes), St. Francis and Council. Second row across running west to east are Hampton (contains town of Moro), Oak Forest, Independence (contains town of Marianna), Liberty and Walnut. Bottom row running west to east are Big Creek, Spring Creek (contains town of Aubrey), Richland (contains town of Rondo), Bear Creek and Hardy. The shapes of these townships are irregular and look like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle with some of the boundaries created by a creek, river or road. There are many little communities in Lee County that show up on a map, but the ones I have listed in parentheses are usually enumerated separately within the township enumeration and indicated at the top of the page.
Not all states use the township designation. Some other designations are Precinct, Division Number, Ward or Police Jury Ward. These can all be found in a very large and expensive book titled "Township Atlas Of The United States" and sometimes kept in the reference section of libraries.
