You will not find either one on any U. S. census listing the parents birth. 1880 was the first year to start putting the parents birth place on the census and they both died before the 1900 census. I found Benjamin in the 1870 San Francisco County, CA census but only his birth state listed.
You might see if he served in the Civil War and look for any pension papers.
