The bodies of Union soldiers who died in Helena were moved to the National Cemetery at Memphis. It is my understanding that when the bodies were disintered, they were placed in new coffins and names marked on the coffins in chalk. They were loaded on the deck of a steamer for the trip to Memphis. A rainstorm washed off the chalk, so most of the Union dead from Helena are buried in graves marked Unknown.
You might check with the National cemetery in Memphis for more information.
