Julie,

John Ryan was living in Birdeye, Cross County, Arkansas when he filled out his WWI Draft Registration Card. There is no nearest relative listed on the card, but he was single and no relatives (parents, spouse, siblings, etc.) depended on him for support. If you don’t have a copy of the card, I can e-mail it to you.

I searched the 1900, 1910 or 1920 censuses for John, but couldn’t find him in Poinsett, Cross or any neighboring counties.

The following record is listed on the Social Security Death Index:

Name: John Ryan
Date of Birth: 25 Feb 1894
Date of Death: Apr 1975
Last Residence: 72370 (Osceola, Mississippi County, Arkansas)
Last Benefit: (none specified)
SSN: 425-18-2552
Issued: Mississippi

You can request a copy of John’s application for a social security card (Form SS-5). The cost is $27 with SSN, $29 without SSN. If John knew his parents’ names, they should be listed.

You can pull up the record at this site (including a letter to request his SSN application):

Do you have his obituary? An obit may have been run in the city where he died, the city where he was buried or both. I would try contacting the Poinsett County Library. They have microfilm of the Harrisburg Modern News and may do a lookup when time permits. If John had relatives in the area, Harrisburg looks to be the nearest major city, so there’s a good possibility of locating an obit.

Poinsett County Library
200 N. East Street
Harrisburg, AR 72432
Phone: 870-578-4465
Hours: M-F 10-5

The Osceola Library doesn’t have much in the way of archived newspapers. If you can’t locate an obituary in the Harrisburg Modern News, try writing to the Arkansas History Commission (www.ark-ives.com). They have microfilm of the Osceola Times.

Hope this helps. Best wishes in your search! :-)
