I'm researching Martha J. Tate and her family for a story I'm writing. In a Scott County, Arkansas Chancery Court Document I have a copy of is this paragraph: "That the said Martha J. Prewitt died intestate in Scott County, Ark. on the 16th day of July 1913, leaving her surviving the following named persons, her only heirs at law, viz: the plaintiff Matilda C. Hunt, and Sarah E. Prewitt her daughters, and the defendants J. O. V. Taylor, a widower W. E. Taylor and Mrs. Myrtle Horn, children of Beatrice Taylor a deceased daughter, and the defendants Allen Williams and Mrs. Elizabeth Edgar children of said Almeta Williams, and Loyd Farnsworth and Roy Farnsworth minors over the age of fourteen years, children of Maggie Farnsworth a deceased daughter of the said Almeta Williams; that the said Sarah E. Prewitt died intestate in Scott County, Arkansas, on the ___ day of____ 1915, leaving her surviving her children the defendants J. A. Prewitt, Woodie Prewitt and Mrs. Viola Roope." This document clearly states that Martha E. Prewitt was the daughter of Jacob and Sarah Tate and further that she was the widow of Thomas J. Prewitt. I believe Martha first married William Allen Leatherwood and that they were the parents of five children: (1) Saran Nancy Elizabeth Leatherwood, who married Joseph Joel Prewitt; (2) James B. Leatherwood, who died young and is buried at Winchester Cemetery in Franklin County, Alabama; (3) Matilda C. Leatherwood, who married Harrison D. Hunt; (4) Leona Beatrice Leatherwood, who married John Aaron Taylor; and (5) Almeta (also listed as Alice in various documents) Leatherwood, who married Thomas J. Williams. After the death or disappearance of William Allen Leatherwood, I believe Martha married Thomas Prewitt. Martha is buried at Union Hill Cemetery in Scott County, Arkansas. It is unknown to me where William and Thomas died or are buried. I am specifically searching for more information on the children and grandchildren of Martha and William Allen Leatherwood and would very much like to know if anyone knows what became of William. Did he serve in the Civil War and die in combat? Did he and Martha divorce and he perhaps went back to Franklin County, Alabama, where they had lived where their first four children were born? If you know about any of these persons, I would like to share more information with you that I have collected. Thank you for any assistance. Notify Administrator about this message?
