Ben, I hope that you are still out there. To answer your question, I have a large file cabinet on all the Arant research. This topic has been covered by so many.Dennis Copeland from CA began the real research into the Arant family in the early 80/90's.He is deceased.Much of his work was copied and given to Arant families in the south. He descends from Conrod's branch.I believe that you are confusing two families.Let's begin, in 1733 the Peter Arndt and his father Hendrich came to America. There was the father, Hendrich, his wife and his children.Peter Arndt was one son.He had a son called Peter who was born in Pennsylvania in 1749 or 1759 (I am speaking w/o looking in files for correct date.).This Peter, the son of the immigrant Peter, moved to Salisbury, NC and eventually, Anson County, NC.Finally, he settled in Chesterfield Co, Sc and Conrod, his brother, settled in Lancaster Co, SC (adjacent county).Conrod's will is on file in Camden District.Conrod's line begins using the Arrant spelling. His sons move to GA.Peter Arant, the son of the immigrant Peter, settled in Chesterfield Co, SC and dies in 1842.I have two family ledger books. One is a copy of Aaron Arant b.1784/1786 ledger. He is a son of Peter Arant.Another ledger is owned by our family. It belonged to Elijah Arant b.1808 d.1881.Elijah Arant is buried at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Lancaster Co, SC.Elijah is the executor of Peter Arant, the son of the immigrant, estate. He writes of this in his ledger. He also post notice in Cheraw Gazette asking all descendents of Aaron Arant to come forward for his inheritance.Philip Arant b.1790 was also believed to be another brother.
Let's talk about Orangeburg. When a Arant husband dies in Lancaster Co, SC, then the widow goes back to Orangeburg. There is much movement between Orangeburg Arants and Chesterfield Co, SC ARants.Orangeburg seems to be the Mecceh for all ARants. When they travel south and west, Orangeburg seems to be the place that they visit.
The Arant family as you know is notorious for renaming. You will have a dozen Peter, Philip, Martin, Richard, John, Conrod.Female Arant women marry but they also name all of their children after their Arant ancestors..many name their children's middle name Aaron, Arant as well.
The Peter, Conrod, etc. came here from Hesse/Hessen, Germany. The births of Hendrich and wife and children are recorded in a church there.I also have this record in files.
After Peter, the immigrant, and his father Henrich came, they moved south as I have just discussed.Within ten years, Jacob Arant arrives and puts a notice in the German paper in Pennsylvania seeking information about the family. He eventually arrives in Lancaster Co, SC.
As to the Orangeburg Arants, I and others are still unable to make the correct link.I do understand that b/c of the repetitious names, it is quite difficult to match fathers and children. The linking of correct parentage is quite hard.
I grew upon the estate of John ARant b.1825.His estate straddled state line of NC/SC.I grew up where it all happened. Therefore, it is easy for me to research my line.I do know that I come from Peter ARant, b.1749 in Pennsylvania. He was a revolutionary war veteran and his pension papers are on file in Anson County, NC.Peter had three known sons.Peter's brother was Conrod Arrant. One of Peter's known sons was Philip Arant.Philip supposedly married a Nancy Arant which this name is repetitiously repeated as well.Philip, per Aaron Arant ledger, dies in 1836.He is written within with his wife Nancy Arant. In census report, Nancy Arant appears as head of household with children meeting the ages of Alexander Arant b.1813 (of Union Co.), Richard Arant b.1817 (of Chesterfield Co.), John Arant b.1825 (of Chesterfield/Union Co, NC), and Elijah Arant (b. 1808).After 1840, Nancy Arant appears to have remarried or living with her family which appears to be the Joshua Watters/Walters family (per Union Co, land deeds). In 1850, Nancy Watters appears in Richard Arant's household. After that year, she is no longer found.
Your Arant comes from Charlotte, NC.Interesting.What is your line of descent? How are you linked to Orangeburg.I wonder if you are in fact related to one of these men above...since you mentioned them. That is why I responded.
Stay in Touch.I hope to hear from you.You may be a missing link to this puzzle.
Julie
