Hi Stuart
Tried to email you direct but must have got the address wrong. If you want to email me direct use: [email protected] here is copy of message I tried to send.
Nice to hear you also live in Yorkshire. My last contact through another name on this site, lives in Canada. We are in Harrogate & I do much of my research at YAS in Leeds where they have copies of most parish registers & copies of the old transcripts. They also have the Wakefield Court Rolls which have proved both useful & frustrating. The latter due to the fact that so many of the 18th century rolls are too damaged to see.
My Ossett Archers are from John Archer, blacksmith. He wrote his will in 1757 although it was not proven until 1774.After leaving provision for his daughter Sarah to stay in the house until her marriage [was she the Sarah who married 1773??] everything else went to his son John, also a blacksmith. This John & wife Mary Scott had 10 children altogether, including George [my ancestor] who became a machine maker. They were non conformists. The other family in Ossett were descended from Robert, a stonemason, whose will in 1749 shows his only surviving son to be Joseph, also a stone mason. This family had their children baptised in the established church which meant that I have been able to sort out 3 generations of Ossett Archers.
My problem is that I cannot find a baptism for either of my blacksmith Johns.I assume the second one was born c. 1727 from his burial record, but I have no idea when/where the earlier John was born or who his parents were.I found the Dewsbury Parish records very confusing for that period.
So if you find any stray Johns or Thomases please let me know.
