I am descended from one of those misspelled Ardiel names in Tipperary. My ancestor Elizabeth Ardel, born May 1823 in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. She married Charles Piper in 1844, and they left for Upper Canada, settling in Biddulph Twp, Middlesex Co, Ontario. They had 9 children, some of whom are buried at St. James Anglican Church on Hwy # 4 Lucan.

As many of you who have posted have mentioned...the many variations of the spelling make research VERY frustrating. From what I have gathered in researching in Tipperary, the distribution of the names is very limited, but dates back as far as 1765 , and is most common in North Tipperary area (where Nenagh is located). There are a lot of listings in Borrisoleigh and Borrisokane (about 12 miles to Nenagh).

The fact that Elizabeth Ardel and Charles Piper came to the Middlesex Co. area in 1845 makes me wonder if there is a connection - often settlers came to a particular place if they had relatives in the area.

If any of this looks familiar to anyone, would love to hear from you.

Leanne Piper
