The tradition most seen when researching the Virginia Armisteads is that the name originally derives from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. In fact, the seat of the elder line in Virginia is called 'Hesse'. There may have been Armisteads in America before the arrival of William Armistead c1635. The name frequently appears in the 'Yorkshire Records' at the time of Queen Elizabeth.Source: 'The Colonial Families of the Southern States of America'.
