Elbert F. ARROWOOD/ARWOOD was the only child of John & Amanda Jane (RICE) ARROWOOD/ARWOOD, of Cocke Co., TN. He was born on Big Creek, Cocke Co., TN, August, 1872. Elbert ARROWOOD was enumerated at age=8 in the 1880 Census with his father, John (age=29), his step-mother, Laura (age=24), and half-sisters, Mary (age=5) and Mamie (age=2), on Big Creek, Cocke Co., TN. Elbert F. ARWOOD (age=27, b. 8/72) was enumerated with his wife, Susie (age=20), in Civil District 1, Cocke Co., TN. I have been unable to find any further record of Elbert & Susie in the 1910, 1920, or 1930 Census enumerations.
Ralph Dean CLARK, of Los Angeles, CA, has compiled the definitive ARROWOOD/ARWOOD database:
but neither he nor several other ardent researchers have ever been able to determine Amanda J.'s identity. I've been researching my first wife's RICE ancestry for over 40 years, and I believe that I have finally identified the mother of Elbert ARROWOOD/ARWOOD.
Jane RICE was born in what is now Madison Co., NC, circa 1848. She was a daughter of Joseph L. & Sarah (RAY) RICE. My late father-in-law always said that his Aunt Jane had married an ARROWOOD, but he couldn't give us any further information about her. And he obviously didn't realize that she preferred to be known as Amanda, which was her middle name! Jane A. Rice, age=2, was enumerated in the household of her parents in the 1850 Census, in Yancey Co., NC. Jane A. RICE, age=12, was enumerated in the household of her parents in the 1850 Census, in Madison Co., NC.
John ARROWOOD & Amanda J. RICE were married in Madison Co., NC, 8 January, 1868. According to Ralph Dean CLARK, John ARROWOOD was a son of James & Lavicia (HUNTER) ARROWOOD. This information is also of great interest to me, as my late father-in-law's parents were James Marion & Hester (HUNTER) RICE.
