Henry Arterberry, my great-grand-father, lived in Denmark, SC with his wife Alice. They had as many as 9 kids: Earl, Yazie, and Whaley John, my grandfather.

Denmark, SC is in Bamberg County which was named after Francis Marion Bamberg who was born June 27, 1838, the son of John Frederick and Cynthia Atterbury Bamberg. Francis M. Bamberg’s grand-father was a Prussian emigrant.

Henry Arterberry, a slave, became the “Overseer” on the Bamberg Plantation. I can not explain why his last name is the same as the maiden name of the plantation owner.
