hi pat, i have some very up to date info on emily caroline artlett which i found in the west sussex public record office in chichester, sussex uk which might explain the confusion over why john artlett is recorded as her father's name on her wedding cert. there is a very strong possibility that emily was adopted or looked after by another member of the artlett family. her father james died between october 1827 and march 1828 in hougham near dover kent. but her parents have spilt up after 4 years of marriage or so they say in some legal documents. however emily and her mother charlotte lived in worthing, sussex in the house belonging to james who paid 10 shillings a week keep which was quite a lot of money in them days. james lived in hougham with job and maria jane their other children. in 1825/1826 charlotte was arrested and sent to horsham gaol in sussex. she had a 7 years transportation sentenced commuted probably because she was pregnant with moses artlett who was born in the gaol in july 1826. the question is what happened to emily then as she was only about 11. i know there was talk of having moses adopted but i know he ended up in the buckland workhouse in dover. more research can be done on the family whne i have time. karen
