The oldest son of William Asbille and Malinda Ross (Cherokee Indian) known in later years as "Old Billy". He was born in Buncomb County, North Carolina near Ashville in 1787. His birth place was in the Cherokee country, thus it is reasonable to believe that both parents lived near the Indians at the time. Even though Malinda had been reared by the Bucknells, the Becknells lived in Indaina country and were related themselves to the Cherokee tribe. The fact that "Billy" knew so much Indian lore and was such an accomplished hunter helps to prove this point.
