Unfortunately, I don't know of a John Clayton Ashcroft. I've found out a bit about Peter and if you look on this site there are other people looking for information about that strain of the family.
Peter married a Sarah Smith and I have on record that they had at least 10 children: Harry, Alf, Bert, Martha, Mabel, Gladys, Edith May, Jess, Nellie and Amy. Peter was Mayor of Bootle 1900/01 and died in 1917. He did quite well for himself I believe and was a builder and landowner.
