The Ashes are one of the oldest families in Britain. The first mention of them is in 1066 with D'Esse Court, a companion of William, Duke of Normandy. The family were of Norman descent and came to Britain in 870 AD and lived in N. Scotland. In 910 under Thorfinn Rollo, they invaded France and came back to England in 1066. In 1326 the family was knighted and moved from Devonshire to Suffolk and Sussex. Other family holdings include Clyst, Fornyson, Heytesbury, Freshfield, and Langly. They first came to the New World in 1623 With Christopher Ash who settled in VA, 1630 to Barbados with Edward Ash, George Ash in 1641 to VA and William Ash to NH in 1655. The different spellings include Ash, Ashe, Esse, Aschey and more, depending on how the scribe thought it sounded. Hope this helps.
