Ashe Family Genealogy Forum
I'm so pleased to have heard from you. Last & only other message posted netted a great uncle that I'd lost for over 30 years. I also have Polly Mina as the daughter of Jess and Mary. But I do not show that her Amos Ash was the son of Isaac. My pitiful records, which consist mainly of copied materials, indicate that Amos who married Polly was born in 1798 in Lincoln Cty, NC & died in 1873 in Sylva NC. The children I have are: Malinda <1824>, Mary 14 August 1824, Thomas Jesse 28 July 1828, Sallie <1831>, Sarah 29 April 1832, A. Noah 1836, and possibly Wm Henderson. My first reaction is that since Amos, Jesse, Thomas and all names biblical were so popular, Amos who married Polly may have been another more distant cousin.
Historically, people of this period were unconcerned about renaming especially alternating between first and 2nd names. They were just as likely to name several children the same 2nd name and usually renamed newly arriving babies after those that had already died. My sister is trying to untangle a mess of names amongst a polygamist family in Ephraim, Utah. The 3 wives each named their children after the same relatives. Toss in a few Sarahs, Maries, Elizabeths, & Victorias & WOAH 'tis an entanglement. I also noticed this while research Rhoda Ashe Webb b. 1834 who married Leonidas Creslely Webb. She is constantly being mixed up with Mahalia b. 1816. Both are frequently identified as Rhoda Mahalia. There seems to be indication that they were sisters, but I have yet to see anything definitive.
