To whom this may Concern--
I do hereby Certify that I knw the Late Nathaniel ASHFORD in the time of the American War.Employed in the Kings works as artificer in the Barrack Master and General Hospital Department in New York, and that he was a Native of New Jersey at or near Amboy, that he always was Looked on as a faithful Subject to his Majesty George the Third, and that the Bearer Ann Ashford has Six Children Widow to the Deseased Nathaniel Ashford.

ASHFORD, Hon. Clarence William Ashford is the s of Jas. Ashford, formerly the Twp. of Hope, near Port Hope Ont., and grandson of Nathaniel Ashford, a UE Loyalist, who came from DUTCHESS COUNTY NY, and was with one Jas. Stevens............the family came originaly from Kent, Englandetc..."
The way the paragraph reads... not sure whether they meant that Jas. Steven's family originally came from Kent, England... or Nathaniel's Ancestors.
NATHANIEL ASHFORD - from "History of Hope Township" p 148 (in part)
"Nathaniel Ashford was among the first four settlers in the Township. He settled on Lot 1 of Concession 2.The Ashford name appears on transfers of this land until 1871.Nathaniel died in 1795 and was the first death in the settlement.

"According to "Old Timer" in the Guide of 1870, the Ashfords and Stevens families came at the same time on the same boat as Harris and Johnson"...from P39 in part....(still quoting Dodd).. Harris was from Dutchess County New York, and Johnson from Pennsylvania. Both had fled to Nova Scotia at the close of the War of Indipendence. In 1793 they came to Niagara by way of New York, the Hudson and Mohawk valleys and the south shore of Lake Ontario..etc.."

The Petition of Nathaniel Ashford of the Township of Hope
Humbly Shews
That Your Petitioner resided in New York during the whole of the last War, and was employed in the Barrack Department and was in all respects a Loyalist, and in several engagements.
That he settled in the above named Township, by the authority of Mr. Walton, with his family which now consists ofa wife and seven children.
That his ill state of health for two years past has prevented him from getting necessary certificates but that he is well known to Mr. Laurence Johnson of Yonge Street and other Loyalists of Kingston.
That your Petitioner’s improvements are on both the lots mentioned in the Annexed Certificate of Mr. Elias Smith, and on the broken front, whereon is his meadow. Your Petitioner therefore prays your Honor would be pleased to grant him the lots 1 in the 1st and 2nd Concession with the broken front.
And Your Petitioner asin duty bound will forever pray

Nancy Ann Graham is bur in bur. St. Peters Cem. Cobourg, Ont. - (ref from stone)
"Abraham Hagerman d Dec 24, 1856 aged 90 yrs.
His wife Nancy diedJan 12, 1831 aged 66 yrs."
Abraham Hagerman is the son of Christopher Hagerman and Elizabeth Cooper... After Nathaniel's demise Nancy Ann married Abraham, and only had one son by him...Joseph Graham Hagerman.
You live in a very Historically interesting area!!
