Tim,
As far as GW Ashlock fighting in the Civil War, keep a couple things in mind.First, if he lived in Kentucky he lived in a neutral state. All the men serving for the south had to march through northern territory and were many times sacked by northern boys on their way to sign up.Even in my own line, there is only one person who fought for the civil war.In Kentucky, the north took over the fort...ummm....if I remember correctly I think it is Harrisburg, but its been so long I can't be absolutely sure.
There are hundreds of Ashlocks who fought in the Civil War, but there are hundreds more that did not.The lines were quite divided and family members fought on both the north and the south side of the war.
Just a couple things to keep in mind.I have always thought it was odd that more of my family did not fight in the war.I guess sometimes we don't know all of the answers, and that is part of the fun in geneology is searching to find out those answers.
Best Regards,
