This family is Ashmun, though you'll see it spelled wrong more often than right.
Justus Ashmun was b. 16 Sep 1736 in Woodbury, CT, and d. 15 Jun 1799 in Blandford, MA. He was the son of John Ashmun and Martha Porter. He m. Keziah Moss, d/o Isaac Moss and Anna Roberts, on 8 Feb 1766 at Kingsbury, NY. They had three children b. at Fort Edward and five more b. at Blandford.
The family story is that Justus served in the French and Indian War under Gen. Phineas Lyman, settled near Fort Edward in 1764, and "some of his brothers" accompanied him into this area.In 1766, he bought land in the Queensbury Patent, near Fort Edward, in 1770, and left Argyle in July 1777 when Burgoyne came in.The family went to Blandford, MA, where Justus bought a tavern and lived out his days.
Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution,Volume 1, p. 317:
Ashmun, Justus. Lieutenant, Capt. Samuel Sloper's (12th) co., Col. David Mosley's (3d Hampshire Co.) regt.; enlisted June 12, 1782; discharged June 17, 1782; service, 6 days; marched to Northampton to support the government, June 12, 1782.
I'm sure that Samuel and Justus were related, but I don't know how.Two of Justus's brothers were in the area --Elnathan Ashmun m. Hannah Bryan (wid of Wait Deming; m3 Levi Crocker; m4 Stephen Chatfield) sometime between Wait Deming's death in 1758 and Hannah's marriage to Levi Crocker in 1780, and John Ashmun m. Martha Ballard, who had a son William b. 6 Mar 1769 at Saratoga.Either of these couples *might* have been Samuel's parents.Another family researcher speculates that Ichoiada Ashmun at Argyle on the 1790 census was also Justus's brother and the father of Samuel -- the census records only one male over 16 and one female in the household, so there are other possibilities.
