Hi, Rachelle. It's great to meet another Ashmore, and from so far away!
I don't have any trace of a Sydney Ashmore, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we aren't related. What I do have is quite a significant concentration of Ashmores in and around Buxton, Derbyshire, England from at least the 1780s until the present day. What might be particularly significant is that the male Ashmores were all coal miners in Buxton from 1790 till about 1880, and that the Ashmores were one of only about 10 families that worked in the coal mines and who had their housing tied to their mining jobs. They only stopped mining coal here when the coal was mostly exhausted and the mines were closed. So there is definitely a strong coal mining tradition in my family, and that may date back to the same time as when your Sydney was young.
Ashmore is not a very common name in England, but there is a cluster of them here in Derbyshire, and - apparently - another cluster in Dorset. But there's no coal mining in Dorset, as far as I know.
Do you know the name of Sydney's brother? Or where in England they came from? Or when they emigrated?
Best wishes,
Phil
