I think it is quite probable your Askins are descendants of the Askin family in the great lakes region in the mid to late 1700s. Askin was a fur merchant and provided well for his multitudinous offspring who also branched off into trading, with some marrying into the native population. In fact, Askin married an Indian woman first, then a French Canadian.
The Askin Papers contain quite a bit of information on the early Askins.
