"DR. GEORGE R. CLAYTON was born in Pike County, Illinois, April 20, 1854, and is a son of THOMAS C. and MARGARET (CARRIER) CLAYTON, the former a native of New Jersey and the latter of Virginia. Both emigrated to Ohio at an early day, whence they moved to Illinois. DR. CLAYTON attended school irregualrly until he was twenty years of age, obtaining education under disadvantages. In 1874, he commenced to read medicine with DR. A. E. McNEALL, of Brownsburg, Illinois, and supported himself by teaching for a period of five years, when he entered the Medical College at Keokuk, Iowa, for one term, and one year later attended the Kentucky School of Medicine, at Louisville, where he graduated with the highest honors, June 30, 1880. He began practice at Donaldson, Iowa, remaining about one year, thence going to Rockfield, Carroll County. On returning home, during holidays, he was married to NETTIE E. SHARER, born April 3, 1854, daughter of JOHN C. and MARGARET (ASKIN) SHARER, of Fulton County, Pennsylvania. He afterward settled in this township, where he has an extensive practice. He is an Odd Fellow and a Republican."
