Susan -

Yes I am a descendant of Basil Talbot through Thomas Athey Talbert through Thomas S. Talbert ...

Pinpointing even an approximate date for the change in spelling of the name is difficult but I would estimate that my branch of the family started using the "Talbert" spelling about 1800. A word of caution, however, because I have not concerned myself with a detailed study of the spelling change. It is probably based upon pronounciation of the name rather than a conscious effort to "change the spelling" from Talbot to Talbert. Basil Talbot was having deeds recorded in Washington County, Virginia between 1800 and 1803 that use various spellings. I have found court documents in which the name Talbot/Talbert/Talburt name was spelt differently in the same deed.

While some later descendants may have made a conscious and deliberate decision to use a different spelling for their last name, I don't believe Basil Talbot who settled in Washington County, Virginia did that.

If you are interested in exploring that topic more, I could investigate this further. However I am rather casual about these family name changes. They occur quite frequently for any number of reasons, but generally I don't attach motives to their evolution.

Charles Talbert
