The LDS family search website has that Capt. George Athey was married first to Anne Moorehead of Galway. She was the cosigner of the transfer of the 80-acre plantation Hopewell in Charles County to James and Elizabeth Martin on 25 May 1683, as indicated in the Charles County Rent Rolls Tract Index 1642-1753.
About six weeks prior to the conveyance, Elizabeth Martin gave birth to a daughter Elizabeth on 10 April 1683; she is believed to have died in infancy. On 23 April 1686, she gave birth to twins, William and Ann. Two other children followed, Margaret and James Jr.
On 11 March 1689, George and his second wife Sarah Marsh conveyed a part of Zachia Manor called Yorkshire; Zachia Manor was the name of the propriety grant that eventually became Charles County.
What is of interest here is the Elizabeth who was married to James Martin was probably the daughter of Capt. George and Anne (Moorehead) Athey. James Martin's will was dated 18 January 1711/12 and probated 10 March 1718. He mentions wife Elizabeth and four children: William, Anne (the twins mentioned above), Margaret and James Jr., who was called a minor at the time of probate. That would put Margaret's birth about 1695/8 and James Jr.'s at 1700 or just after.
On 9 May 1729, William and James Jr. conveyed (along with their wives, Ann and Mary respectively, believed to have been sisters or cousins named Lynes/Lines) the 80 acres of Hopewell. William Martin died three years later on 22 May 1732 and his estate was administered by his sister Margaret, now the wife of Henry Woodyard, and by John Clarke Jr., who was married to his twin sister Anne. [Woodyard was rendered as both Woodward and Woodard in the original records, a common occurrence.]
Question: wouldn't the above indicate that back in 1683 Capt. George and Anne (Moorehead) Athey conveyed the 80 acres of Hopewell to "their son-in-law and daughter," James and Elizabeth Martin? And timed it to honor the birth of their first grandchild?
