I am descended from John Atkin, christened 1844, the son of Henry and his first wife Ann, who died 1829. Henry then remarried Elizabeth Scoffin. John ran away from home in 1844, coinciding with his father's death, to join the Army and served in Ireland, the Crimea and India, charging with the Heavy Brigade at Balaclava in 1855. The story in the family was that he did not get on with his step-mother, Elizabeth. There was also some story of a relative who went to Canada and made a fortune. Charles? Whatever, unless it is the coincidence of Victorian fashion, John named his only son, born in India, Frederick John. He was my grandmother's father. Please get in touch.
