Bruce, Have you and I communicated before ? My GGGrandfather, Robert Taber, with his wife Barbara, left Edinburgh, Scotland in 1845. They left their children there. They settled in Newcastle on Tyne and had another son named John Taber Atkin, born in 1847. I do not know why Robert changed his surname to Atkin from Taber. Perhaps the law was hot on his heels. His mothers maiden name was Aitken, Ann Aitken. She married James Taber in Edinburgh in 1803. John Taber Atkin dropped his middle name (The former family surname) somewhere along the way and his son, Robert, did not have a middle name. John Atkin(My GGrandad,John Atkin) married Christiana Metcalfe in Bradford, Yorks. I just cannot shake off the similarities between your Newcastle Atkins' and mine. My Dad, John Atkin, was born in Halifax in 1905, just before Grandad, Robert, retired from the army, West Riding Regiment. They all came to the States in 1908 after selling his pub in Mount Tabor, Yorks. Note the similar names here too. Are your findings pretty solid ? Bob Atkin Hickory, NC Notify Administrator about this message?
