Atwoods of Licking County area, Ohio (branch from Virginia) update
This information is a followup to my query on Mary (unknown maiden name)Atwood/Wilcox of Fairfield/Muskingum/Licking county area of Ohio.
1. Mary was married to a William Atwood first.
2. Both are from Virginia and at least some of their children were born in Virginia.
3. William shows in Muskingum County (formed from Fairfield) Ohio on the 1820 and 1830 census data.
4. William appears to die leaving mary with several Atwood children including at least Abigail, Rachel, George W., and Thomas J. Atwood.
5. Next she marries Joseph Wilcox in the same area of Ohio (his first wife, from Connecticut originally, has also died).
6. Later, within a year, her daughter Abigail Atwood marries William Harvey Wilcox; a son of Joseph Wilcox.
7. Mary has two more children with Joseph Wilcox, Benjamin F. and William H. Wilcox.Benjamin dies of wounds in the civil war, both serve.
I hope the data below is helpful to someone.
I suspect, but can not prove that Mary may have been William Atwood's second wife, with James, Eli, Margarett, and William products of the William and the first wife, with all also going to Ohio from Virginia with William and Mary. This is speculative though so far, but is seeming more and more probable.
----------------------------------------------
The 1850 census on Mary (note that this is the ONLY one that has Maryland down for her origination---all others are Virginia for her and her husband)
This is after Joseph Wilcox----second husband after William Atwood has died.
Abigail has already married Joseph's son and is in her own home. The data on the 1850 cenus is as follows:
NameAge
Mary Wilcox49
Georg Atwood19
Thomas H Atwood17
Rachiel Atwood17
Wm H Wilcox9
Benjamin F Wilcox7
The data collection on this census wasn't the best.George is usually found as George W., listed sometimes as George Washington Atwood.Thomas is listed as Thomas J (Jefferson) Atwood in most places.Rachel has her first name spelled several ways.William H. is also William Henry Harrison Wilcox.Benjamin F. (Franklin) Wilcox.
Mary shows up first about 1840 in Fairfield as the head of a household, with children---apparently after William's death. She is likely on William Atwood's 1820 and 1830 census in Muskingum County prior.
Mary vanishes, presumably dies after 1870.
George W and Thomas J Atwood both show up in Clark County Ohio later (Thomas J even has a niece with him on the census).George W. is a farmer and lives his life there and has several descendants.George W. married Elizbeth Hewitt in Licking county, and moves to Illinois from there about a year later.Thomas J. was a physician in nearby Martindale, but vanishes with the civil war.
Rachel appears to first marry a Mr. Tracy, has some children, then marries a Mr. Stigler/Steigler/Sligerand has another child, then divorces him.She appears to stay in Licking County also, but vanishes after 1880.I suspect she's buried somewhere in Licking county, but who knows where or under what name.
William H. Wilcox stays in the Licking/Fairfield County areas the rest of his life and has descendants. He served in the civil war.
Benjamin F. Wilcox, was severely wounded, captured by the confederacy and died the same day after a battle in Maryland.
Abigail Atwood/Wilcox (wife of Joseph Wilcox's son William Harvey Wilcox) is the one who names a daughter Permilia (possibly after Nehemiah Atwood's wife) and a son James Davenport Wilcox (with a James Davenport present in early Fairfield County, and his apparent father earlier in the Gallo, Ohio area; and possibly in the Virginia Revolutionary War contingent).Abigail has several descendants in both Southeast Kansas and also in the Indiana/Illinois areas. She moved from Kansas back to Terre Heute, Indiana late in life to stay with daughters.
Abigail, and I believe George are born in Virginia. This places the union of Mary and William in Virginia.
The 1820 and 1830 census data shows several children for William Atwood in Muskingum. With the coming and going of children, I think this gives room for the liklihood of James, William, Margaret, and Eli to have been children from a first wife of Williams prior to the move from Virginia; but that made the move. Then cenuses in 1820 and 1830 are mirky on the wife's actual ages---census guesses perhaps?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 1820 census:Muskingum, Ohio, United States
one son 0 to 10; one son 16 to 26; One male 45 and up; one female 10 to 16; two females 16 to 26 NO APPARENT WIFE, unless is one of the two femailes of 16 to 26.
The 1830 census:Muskingum, Ohio, "United States"
one 50 to 60 male, one 50 to 60 female; One 15 to 20 male, one 10 to 15 female, and one 15 to 20 female. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT MARY FLORENCE AND A SON CALLED WILLIAM ATWOOD WERE PART OF THIS HOUSEHOLD AT THIS TIME. THE 10 TO 15 FEMALE COULD BE ABIGAIL???
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The verification of the William and Mary Atwood union is also by the death certificate of Abigail Atwood/Wilcox in Terre Heute, Indiana which states William and Mary 'Alwood'.
The orbituary of George W. Atwood in Marshall, Clark County, Ohio in 1905 verifes again that 'Abigail Wilcox' was his sister.Note that George W. also names a son Thomas J. and George again!!!
