Thanks for the additional information. I would appreciate knowing how to access the Metis scrip information. So far I have found a few good samples through searches on the internet, but I hoped there was a more systematic way to do searches.
The Garneau history site (http://www.agt.net/public/dgarneau/direct.htm et.) has lots of wonderful information, but the anti-white tone of much of the site bothers me after a while. There may be justification, but I find it a distraction.
I too had found Augustin living with the Ross family in the 1901 census on http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/and noted that the original page said he was born in "Assa." (Assiniboia).
The old-style "long s" is used in both Assa. and Ross so that they almost look like Afsa. and Rofs. But the "long-s" (used as the first "S" of a "double S" in those days) is smooth, lacking the hook that is present in a handwritten "f" and loops backward rather than forward when it comes down. - So definitely "Ross" and "Assa.".
Here is some more info on this family. Note that it is missing most of the children, but the website is quite well documented. It is well worth checking it out.
