Not sure you are still on-line, but if you are, this is copied from the Census records for John Henry Autman - and I only have seen it spelled "Autman" on the census for this group - although other families listed in other places are spelled "Aughtman."
The census takers wrote what they thought they heard, and their spelling was not necessarily like the family actually spelled the name.The ages given varies, depends on their birthday versus the census date. Most people find that the age listed is "give or take a year," depended on the census taker.
Sometimes it is also very hard to read what they wrote due to bad handwriting or spots on the census roll.But according to the census, all members of the family could read and write.
Below is the best that I could decipher from the microfilm of the census records for John Henry Autman and family-living in Pike County AL in 1910 & 1920.
