Margaret "Peggy" Hastings, the acknowledged daughter of John Hastings and wife Nancy Ann (poss. nee Holloway), married John Ault at Knox County, TN on 22 November 1809. [Jordon Dodd: Tennessee Marriages to 1825.] In some quarters it is written that John Ault and Peggy Hastings' daughter Nancy Elizabeth Ault married Anthony Rutherford at Knox County, TN on 19 July 1849. It is further claimed that Anthony and Nancy Elizabeth (Ault) Rutherford's son Pryor married Julia Henderlight, giving rise to a Henderlight family connection with the Ault and Hastings ancestry.
Unfortunately, this was not the case as John and Peggy (Hastings) Ault's daughter Nancy had a middle initial "H.", never married and died at Bedford County, TN after the June 1900 census. She was the last known surviving member of her family and none of her siblings ever married.
According to 1850 and 1860 censuses of the John and Nancy E. (Ault) Rutherford family of Knox County, TN, Nancy (Ault) Rutherford was 19 years old in 1850 (b. circa 1831) and age 28 in the 1860 census (b. circa 1832).
Unfortunately, Nancy Ault's purported father, John Ault, died at Bedford County, TN on 8 August 1829 [Cemetery Records of Bedford County, TN] and her purported mother, Margaret "Peggy" Hastings died at Bedford County, TN on 7 December 1875 [ibid.] after having been the widow Ault for 36 years. Thus, John Ault and Marget "Peggy" Hastings could not possibly have been Nancy Elizabeth (Ault) Rutherford's parents.
