Moses Austin and Moses Bates were brothers-in-law, as Bates married Austin's sister, Martha and they were mygr.+ grandparents. The Moses were in business together in CT and noved to VA where they started the town of Austinville. When Austin got a grant from the Spanish to establish a lead mine in LA Territory, he sent his nephew Elias Bates, son of Moses, along with Judathar (Judathan) Kendall to establish his claim, and get the whole operation set up in 1897.Then the Moses followed with their families in 1898, (which is an interesting story). After the venture in MO, Moses Austin became interested in the settlement of Americans in Texas. He was given permission to do so, but died in MO before he could accomplish this, and requested his son, Stephen to continue the task.I have a copy of the letter his wife wrote to Stephen, (written for her by another grandfather of mine, John Honey who was a son-in-law of Elias),encouraging him to honor his father's wish, which he did.Elias Bates was with Moses when he died in Herculaneum, MO,and wrote his death certificate, as he was a Jefferson Co. Court Justice.
