Austin-Austen DNA Project
There has been a change in the leadership of the Austin-Austen DNA Project following the death on February 7, 2011 of its Project Coordinator, Dr. Michael E. Austin. The project has been supported jointly by the Austin Families Genealogical Society (AFGS), of which Mike was President, and the Austin Families Association of America (AFAOA).
As project coordinator, Mike collected information about the Austin male-line ancestry of potential candidates for DNA testing and maintained a database of DNA test results of Austin or Austen male-line descendants, for comparison and determination of possible ancestral relationships. He also determined which potential candidates were most important for this purpose, so that their tests could be supported by limited AFGS/AFAOA funding. Art Sikes will succeed Mike as Project Coordinator and carry on those functions.
Carol Austin has served as Fund Coordinator, contacting potential candidates for testing as well as ordering and distributing test kits for them from Family Tree DNA. She will continue to assist the new Project Coordinator in that capacity. She advised the Project Coordinator on the selection of candidates for testing, and will continue to do so.
Art and Carol are experienced genealogists who have been involved in the DNA project almost from its beginning. They serve respectively as the compilers of the descendancy lines of two of the major Austin lines in America, those of Robert Austin of Rhode Island and Samuel Austin of Boston. In addition, Art serves as project coordinator for his own surname DNA project (Sikes/Sykes), with 99 test results posted to date. Art’s Austin connection is through his mother, Arlene (Austin) Sikes, a descendent of Richard Austin of Charlestown, Mass.
