The Last Will and Testament of William Austin dated 2-18-1834 was probated 3-8-1841. Head of household at Gilder Plantation in the 1790 census of Greenville District, SC. willed the following property to his wife Jane, 9 Negroes, namely Ben, Ned, Dennis, Cato, Joe, Hannah and child, Silva and Dolley. This is the earliest record that I have found of any slaves called my name in my records. Not to say there were others before or after.
