You're right about William Dawson Jnr being an instant baby.
Yes, I did see the convict application to marry re. William Dawson & Mary Strikes. I was thinking it must be a different William Dawson, maybe the Wm Dawson who died in 1843, 1858, 1880 or 1887. There were a few of them. Mary Strikes was 37 years old and I'm sure William had ideas of having a large family which he wouldn't be able to with someone of that age. It would have been considered scandalous for a 27 year old to marry someone 10 years older. Still it might be worth following up.
The coronial inquiry established that he was born in 1800 and aged 54 when he died. Margaret Dawson and other witnesses had no doubts about his age so I'm pretty certain that's correct.
The Hugh Crawford made 3 trips to Australia between 1825-1827. I can't recall where I saw his name on the passenger list but there was a Wm Dawson on one of those arrivals. It might not have been him.
