Obituary
Death of Mr. Joseph Wright
Mr. Joseph Wright, of Newstead, Adelaide, who died recently in a private hospital in Kent Town, was well known and very highly respected in Mount Gambier and district, being one of the town's best known residents. He was engaged for a long period in the local building trade, and later as librarian of the Mount Gambier Institute.
The Late Mr. Joseph Wright
Born in Brooklyn, Long Island, America, on May 28, 1857, Mr. Wright was 83½ years of age. He arrived in Sydney with his parents in July 22, 1877, and four years later removed to Mount Barker, S.A., where he secured employment at the local foundry. His father having taken up land at the Snuggery, near Millicent, made him determined to join him, which he did in 1878. For four years he was employed by Mr. Glen at Mayurra Station, and on one occasion accompanied the owner's son to Adelaide overland with a big mob of cattle. Friendly blacks wore met with en route, and whilst at Meningie the travellers joined the townsfolk in welcoming the two Princes, King George V. and his brother, who arrived from Goolwa per steamer at 6.30 a.m.
On December 22, 1881, Mr. Wright was married to Miss Alice Jane Carr at Mount Barker, and returned immediately to the Millicent district to reside. Mrs. Wright was a sister of the late Mr. A. W. Carr, who for very many years was a baker in Commercial Street, Mount Gambier.
In 1884 the family removed to Mount Gambier, where they resided for 30 years. During his residence at the Mount, Mr. Wright was in the employ of Messrs. Cock and Millhouse, Barratt and Andrews and Mr. Alfred Billing, finally launching out on his own account, when he constructed a good many dwellings in the town. He was Secretary of the Sons of Temperance Lodge for a lengthy period, and was also a Freemason. During his 26 years residence in Adelaide the late Mr. Wright rendered outstanding service as a trustee of the Sons of Temperance Lodge, his knowledge as a master builder being in great demand in connection with the valuation of city and suburban properties. He also occupied the high position of Grand President of the Grand Lodge. In addition to his widow, the following members of the family survive:—Mrs. Ron Osman, of the Grange; Mrs. Geo. A. Hicks, Caulfleld, Vic.; Mr. F. R. L. Wright, Postmaster, Yorketown; Mrs. E. C. Slater, Pinnaroo; Mrs. F. W. Dacnke, South Yathong, Jerilderie, N.S..W., and Mrs. J. D. McIntyre, of Newstead. One son, Theo, who for years was employed in the office of the " S.E. Star," Mount Gambier, was killed in the Great War. There are also 17 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.
